Proline overcome Bright Stars to win maiden Uganda cup

first_imgProline players celebrate winning the Uganda Cup on Saturday.Stanbic Uganda Cup finalProline FC 1(5) – 1(4) Bright Stars FCMasaka Recreational Ground, MasakaSaturday, 25-05-2019MASAKA – Bright Stars captain Nelson Ssenkatuka missed the only penalty in the shoot outs as Proline clinched a first ever Uganda Cup crown on Saturday, May 25th-2019.The two sides shared spoils after 90 minutes, drawing 1-1.Ssenkatuka handed Bright Stars the lead before Mustafa Mujuzi leveled matters in the last minute of normal time. Fred Kajoba’s side ended the game with 10 men following two bookings shown to defender Aggrey Kirya. The Stars applied early pressure, pegging Proline back but could not create telling chances worthy of scoring. The first chance of the game came on the half hour mark as Bright Stars midfielder Jamil Kalisa made a brilliant run through the middle but shot over after an excellent inter-play with Brian Kayanja at the edge of the box.Two minutes later, Saka Mpima became the first player to be booked after a foul on Ssenkatuka.Moments later, Ssenkatuka broke through and found himself one on one with Proline custodian Hassan Matovu. The youthful shot stopper stood big and was on hand to deflect Ssenkatuka’s left-footed strike out for a corner. With three minutes to play in the first half, Kirya was booked for fouling Proline midfielder Hakim Ssekito. At the end of the first 45 minutes, Bright Stars were in control of proceeding with only a goal lacking in their play. Two minutes after the recess, Kalisa played in Ssenkatuka who was tripped in the area. With no whistle from referee Ali Sabira, the forward picked himself up and forced a save from Matovu. On 53 minutes, Proline Captain Nordin Bunjo robbed Farook Katongole of the ball inside the Bright Stars’ area but shot straight at Hamza Muwonge who held onto the effort at the first time of asking.Three minutes later, Ssenkatuka was finally paid for his efforts as he curled a free kick past Matovu following a foul on Kayanja just outside Proline’s area.Proline who had struggled throughout the game looked dejected and were still failing to create anything meaningful in-terms of chances.Their best chance of the game came on 70 minutes when Hakim Sendi pounced on a loose ball following a Bright Anukani corner kick but Muwonge produced an exceptional reflex save to push the ball out for another fruitless corner. With 9 minutes to play, Proline were handed a lifeline as Kirya was sent off following a second booking. On 89 minutes, substitute Hakim Kiwanuka made a powerful run down the left, beat two defenders including Farook Katongole who handled the ball inside his penalty area. Sabira pointed to the spot enabling Mujuzi to level the scores at 1-1 and sent the final into sudden death.Mujuzi, Anukani, Ivan Egaku, Ivan Bogere and Kiwanuka all converted Proline’s five penalties. For Bright Stars, Katongole, Sam ssekito, Rajab Kakoza and Mathadious Jungu converted but Ssenkatuka had his kick saved by Matovu to hand Proline the trophy. The title is Proline’s second in 7 days, having won the FUFA Big League crown last Saturday.Proline thus become the first lower division side to win the Uganda Cup.Uganda Cup Awards-Best goalkeeper – Benson Wagima (Bright Stars)-Top Scorer – Mustafa Mujuzi (Proline)MVP – Mustafa Mujuzi (Proline)Comments Tags: bright starsproline fctopUganda Cup 2019last_img read more

Ferrari chief Luca di Montezemulo to quit after 23 years

first_imgLuca di MontezemoloLegendary Italian sportscar manufacturer Ferrari was hit by a rude shock on Wednesday with the announcement that company President Luca Cordero di Montezemolo had been pushed out after a boardroom split. This was just a few days after Montezemolo announced he will be stepping down on October 13, dogged by six years of Formula One racing failure. He had been the President at Ferrari for 23 years.  Fiat Head Sergio Marchionne will be taking over at the helm from Montezemolo. The decision not to appoint Montezemolo to the new board of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles also suggested the Italian businessman was on his way out. Ferrari is one name that has been synonymous with Formula One racing ever since 1950. In fact, the team’s logo of a black stallion against a red background is instantly recognised by motorsports fans across the world. However, the legendary marquee’s poor performance over the past six years, in addition to recent clashes in strategy between Montezemolo and Fiat, had led insiders to believe that his exit was due.Commenting on the decision, Marchionne said the following in a statement, “Our desire to see Ferrari express its full potential on the track led to certain mutual misunderstandings that were voiced publicly this weekend. I want to personally thank Luca for everything he has done for Fiat, for Ferrari, and for myself.”Concerns over Ferrari’s future under Montezemolo were also raised in June after he said he may pull his team out of Formula One because it “isn’t working”, and suggested the company could switch to sports-car competition. Montezemolo’s 23 years at Ferrari saw the team’s drivers win the Formula One title six times, but the last title came in 2007. Since then, the team has struggled to compete on the track against the likes of Red Bull and Mercedes. Incidentally, on Saturday, Montezemolo had publicly stated he wanted to spend another three years in the job.advertisementAt the same time, Marchionne had said, “Montezemolo’s business record is very good but in the case of Ferrari, a leader must also be judged on sporting results.”last_img read more

Pakistan Cricket Board disappointed with Sarfraz Ahmed’s ICC ban over racial slur

first_imgThe Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has said it considers the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) decision to ban Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed over his racial slur against South Africa’s Andile Phehlukwayo with “utmost disappointment”.While maintaining that it has a zero-tolerance approach towards racist behaviour, the PCB pointed out that the issue that has led to the ban was amicably resolved between Sarfraz and Phehlukwayo and the cricket boards of Pakistan and South Africa. The apex body of Pakistan cricket also hinted it would appeal against the ban and revealed that Sarfraz Ahmed will be flown back from South Africa. In his absence, Shoaib Malik will lead the team in the remainder of the ongoing ODI series and the T20I series, starting February 1 in the Rainbow Nation.Sarfraz was handed a four-match ban by the ICC on Sunday over his racist comments during the second ODI between South Africa and Pakistan on Tuesday. Sarfraz had taken a jibe at Phehlukwayo: “Abey kaale, teri ammi aaj kahaan baitheen hain? Kya parwa ke aaye hai aaj?” [Hey black guy, where’s your mother sitting today? What (prayer) have you got her to say for you today?]”A statement from the PCB read: “The PCB notes the ICC decision on Sarfaraz Ahmed with its utmost disappointment.”PCB had anticipated that the matter had been resolved amicably between the two players and the two Boards following Sarafraz Ahmed’s public apologies which were accepted by the player, the Board and South Africa cricket team.”The PCB will be pursuing this matter at the ICC forums with the objective to bring reforms to the Code, promoting amicable resolutions to issues as opposed to penalties. Having said that, the PCB reiterates its zero-tolerance approach towards racist comments and behavior.”In consultation with Sarfaraz, it has been decided that he will return to Pakistan immediately… Mohammad Rizwan has been included in the T20I side.”advertisementNotably, Sarfraz had come up with a public apology on social media after facing a severe backlash from the cricket fraternity. Former Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar had also criticised the comments made by Sarfraz against Phehlukwayo.Sarfraz also posted a photo of himself with Phehlukwayo and revealed he had personally apologised to the South Africa all-rounder.
