Amendment to Act Allows New Type of Motorcycle
A new type of vehicle known as the Can-Am Spyder will now be allowed on Nova Scotia’s roads. New legislation, effective June 10, allows the registration of motorcycles with two wheels on the front steering axle, provided they meet motor vehicle safety standards set by Transport Canada. “We are pleased to make this type of vehicle accessible to motorcycle enthusiasts,” said Murray Scott, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal. Several other provinces also permit these vehicles on their highways. Described as part snowmobile, part sports car, the Bombardier vehicle has two front wheels and one rear wheel which allows for improved stability. Transport Canada has done extensive testing on the Can-Am Spyder, and has developed Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards criteria to address vehicle stability. Any motorcycle that is registered for road use would have to conform to Transport Canada’s safety standards, minimizing road safety concerns. All registered motorcycles must meet Transport Canada and Nova Scotia inspection standards.
