STATE REP RACE QA Erin Buckley Discusses What Shell Do To Support

first_imgWILMINGTON, MA — Wilmington Apple is asking weekly questions to the seven candidates running in contested primaries for the Wilmington/Tewksbury State Representative seat (19th Middlesex).Below, in her own words, are the responses to this week’s questions from candidate Erin Buckley (R-Tewksbury).#15) What you will do at the State House to ensure that our local police and fire departments have what they need to adequately protect us? Do you support a fire substation in North Wilmington? Did you/do you support the construction of the new center fire station in Tewksbury that was approved last year?Supporting all of our first responders is essential. It is of vital importance. In fact, as a Legislative Aide in the State House, I helped draft a bill making assault on a law enforcement officer a felony offense. I absolutely support a fire substation in North Wilmington, as it is the section of Wilmington most likely to see significant growth in the near future. The Town of Wilmington has taken the first pragmatic steps towards this process by funding a fire substation study. Pending the results of that study, I believe Wilmington will make the proper next step. The Tewksbury Center Fire Station is 51 years old and it is the top municipal construction priority for Tewksbury. Tewksbury Fire have an amazing reputation and they serve our community bravely daily; it is time for the central hub of fire/EMS response to be brought into the 21st Century. As a member of the Tewksbury Finance Committee, I understand the financial burden this will place on the taxpayer, an approx. increase of $100 per year on already steep property tax bills, but I value this new fire station as essential spending on a life-saving improvement.#16) The Vietnam War Moving Wall recently visited Wilmington. It was a sobering reminder of what the men and women in our armed forces are willing to sacrifice to preserve our freedom. What will you do at the State House to support our local veterans and veterans statewide? What, if anything, have you done as a private citizen and/or locally elected official that shows a commitment to veterans? Do you personally have any family that serves/served?My husband and I were the first two volunteers for the very first shift on the Moving Wall, and it was entirely our privilege. The turnout from our community was overwhelming — but not surprising. As for family connections to the service, my late father-in-law served in the U.S. Army in the 8th Infantry Division (The Golden Arrow) in West Germany in 1964/65. We also have close friends who are retired Marines and Navy SEALs. (Note: Everyone should listen to former SEAL Team 3 member Jocko Willink’s podcast as well as read his books. There is no better authority on self-motivation and leadership broadcasting today.) I have worked for the benefit of all of our veterans. As a Legislative Aide I participated in the American Legion Auxiliary’s Girls Helping Girls/Stand Down Boston event by bundling and donating personal health and hygiene supplies for our homeless female veterans. Sadly, I also often found myself lobbying on behalf of our suffering homeless vets, of both genders, looking for work or shelter in the 2nd Barnstable, alongside my Representative, Will Crocker. As a State Representative, I would focus two basic needs for far too many of our veterans out there: shelter and sobriety. Far too often, addiction and veterans go hand-in-hand. We have an epidemic of PTSD being treated by the sufferers themselves, via self-medication. This must come to an end. Veterans must become more of a priority in the Commonwealth.(NOTE: Do you have a question for the candidates?
