“upgraded” Crawford market planned as the city’s first hygienic uniform open market space The civic body has proposed a Rs 100-crore project to revamp the space behind the clock tower that can accommodate vendors in a more uniformed way According to the proposed plan four ground-plus-three blocks in the 6000 square metres of space behind the 125-feet mechanical clock will be revamped The central plaza which is currently encroached will be redeveloped to retain the vacant space The plan will also provide for underground parking that will allow trucks to unload the goods in the market About 10 per cent of the entire space will be occupied by administrative offices to monitor the functioning of the market “We are looking at a holistic re-development of the space which is currently encroached” said Sanjay Deshmukh additional municipal commissioner in-charge of markets department “With this we will be able to relocate all the fish vendors from Shivaji Market who operated from Crawford originally” The proposal which has been approved by the markets committee of the civic body has been sent to the heritage committee for a final approval The civic body has appointed conservation architect Abha Lambah for the project The architect had also recently taken up the restoration of the front facade of the building which houses more than 500 vendors Lambah and fellow architects working on the project studied the original designs of the market dating back to the 1900s to re-create an open market plaza for the city A careful study of the old designs showed that the actual market space was designed around a central vacant plot with the building structures only on the edges This the architects explained was in keeping with the essence of open market space allowing people to bargain and feel the commodity from the specific stalls but also giving them the ease to commute and think freely The architects also came across a 19th century description of Crawford Market by a writer of the name James Furneaux which mentions that there was a large central space in the market where people would have coffee and tea in the evenings All the old records also mention of the space where people would sell mutton fish and chicken for a living they said “We want to keep the heritage status of the historic market intact” said an architect working on the project Though Crawford Market is a Grade-1 heritage structure where alterations are strictly not permitted architects said there had been cases where revamp is permitted in interest of “the long life of these dilapidated structures” The Children’s Centre at the Prince of Wales Museum another heritage structure was recently revamped in a similar fashion The Crawford market is also categorised in the ‘C2’ category of dilapidated structures that allows for revamp without evacuation The redevelopment of Crawford Market has been stuck in a controversy since 2006 when residents and conservationists accused the BMC of gifting the prime plot and profits worth over Rs 500 crore to private developers Finally in 2010 the corporation decided to carry out the work itself For all the latest Mumbai News download
